CPE 5403 Green Roof Design Construction and Maintenance

  • Instructor: Dr. Wesley E. Donahue, PE, PMP

A green roof is a common term used for a roof that is covered with a special system of membranes and materials, culminating in a top layer of vegetation. Sometimes called vegetation roofs, eco-roofs, or living roofs, green roofs are usually topped off with a variety of slow growing grasses and plants native to the geographical area of the building.

This course will provide a foundational understanding of vegetative roofing systems, discussing the advantages of green roofing and explaining concepts of structure, layers, water management, plant selection and maintenance. At the end of this course you should be able to:

+ Understand the history behind green roofs, as well as their place in modern roof design.

+ List multiple advantages of green roofing systems.

+ Understand the unique construction aspects of green roofs.

+ Recognize the basic components, or layers, of a green roofing system.

+ Understand the maintenance requirements of green roofs.
