Marcellus Shale has been formed over eons and now is a resource for natural gas. New technologies have allowed the natural gas to be extracted from this difficult medium. Natural gas has been available for some time but only now is it feasible to be extracted for several reasons, which will be explored.
This course covers essential information regarding the science of the drilling processes of Marcellus Shale to obtain natural gas as well as what drilling’s effects are on society. At the end of this course, you should be able to:
+ Understand the composition of Marcellus Shale and where it is prevalent in the United States.+ Understand why there is suddenly a booming interest in drilling Marcellus Shale for natural gas.+ Understand how the natural gas is obtained through the various processes employed during drilling.+ Speak to topics relating to environmental, societal, and economic effects of Marcellus Shale drilling.
