Businesses use trademarks to identify their goods and/or services. These trademarks are typically words or symbols (logos), but the concept of a trademark has expanded to include phrases/slogans, product designs and even sounds and smells.

This course provides practical tips and approaches to help you determine whether your organization has trademarks, service marks, and/or trade names, and to help you protect and profit from them.  At the end of this course you should be able to:

+ Describe what is protected under trademark law.

+ Explain what rights are included in the “bundle of rights” under trademark law.

+ Apply the key steps associated with obtaining U.S. trademarks and service marks.  

+ Explain the benefits, costs, and risks of owning and using trademarks.

+ Articulate the basic rules of proper trademark usage and licensing to avoid abandonment of rights.
